J Bharathi was born and raised in South India. He was sent to a boarding school when he was five years old and was pushed to be an academic. Nevertheless, he was more fascinated by books and movies. He Initially, he tried his hands in film making and even went as far as to assist a director in an Indian movie. He wrote his own screenplays since he was a teenager. After years of struggling in B-movie industry, Bharathi took to writing inspired by the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Having grown up in a place where oral storytelling is very predominant, his writing style does have shades of exaggerations that comes pretty much closer to Marquez's magical realism. His book 'Zahhak's Wildest Dreams' was originally a screenplay that he intended to make it into a movie but dropped due to financial constraints.
